It is likely that those who are local to Lichfield will have heard of Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust (http://www.lhcrt.org.uk/) and have possibly seen the work they have been doing to reinstate the historic Lichfield and Hatherton Canals from Huddlesford to Hatherton.
Their latest project, #TunnelVisionAppeal involves the target of raising a staggering one million pounds, in order to build a tunnel for the Lichfield Canal under the busy Cross-city railway line from Lichfield to Birmingham. The aim is to build the tunnel at the same time as when County Highways extends the Southern Bypass, and as a result funds need to be raised by the end of 2019. To execute the project after this section of the Bypass is in place would make it significantly more expensive.
This is an ambitious project with a big price tag. However the Trust has an excellent track record in fund raising. Indeed in 2007, when the Lichfield Southern Bypass was to reach Birmingham Road, the Trust raised £490,000 without grants to install a canal culvert under the new roadway, stopping just short of the railway embankment. Their latest project #TunnelVisionAppeal will be a continuation of the work that has already been done.
As part of the fund raising, six athletes have taken on the challenge to run in the Lichfield 10k on Sunday 9th September 2018 (http://lichfield10k.co.uk/) to raise money for the #TunnelVisionAppeal Trust. Volunteers Harry and Chris, and Trust supporters Scott, James, Mark and Heath, will now be running in LHCRT logoed vests provided by Raphael Design.
